5 great frozen margaritas

With or without salt, made according to a traditional recipe or infused with fruity flavours, the frozen margarita makes a wonderful celebration beverage, piled high with slushy ice and a good splash of tequila. Here where to grab your next icy jug of this punchy cocktail.

El Toro (Durban North, Durban)

The mixologists at this Mexican tapas bar are constantly experimenting with exciting cocktails. The margaritas are strong and feisty, just as they should be. Get your frozen fix of the green-hued spicy cucumber and mint margarita or the theatrical Corona-topped version with a bottle of beer to add that extra kick. (R65)

Jo Mexican (Garsfontein, Pretoria)

This colourful spot cooks up classic Mexican fare with a spin. Their frozen margs churn away at the bar and are infused with lime and mint, and make for a cooling sipper to pair with the jalapeño-spiced grub. (R45 per jar)

Hudson’s The Burger Joint (Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands)

While not a Mexican joint, this burger spot offers a few fiery Tex-Mex options and jars of margarita to wash it all down. Their frozen version comes in a single serving size for R38 or R120 for a litre. Choose from lemon and lime, or pomegranate, or a mix of both flavours.

La Santa Muerte (Melville)

This hip Mexican eatery is serving up a fresh take on Mexican cuisine for Melville foodies. The cocktail selection is wide-ranging and includes two kinds of frozen margaritas. The standard version is a pure Mexican margarita made with imported tequila and served in a slushy frozen form with a side of lime (R58). For larger groups, try the frozen margarita float that’s served in a jug for R143.

San Julian (City Bowl, Cape Town)

This authentic Mexican spot in the Mother City is popular for its potent frozen margarita offering. With tequilas like Don Julio and Sauza on the menu, you know you’re in for a kick when it comes to the cocktails. Made by the owner’s grandfather, Don Arturo, the margaritas come in berry or lime versions in single glasses (R45) or as a jug to share (R160).
