5 great Iftaar specials at Halaal restaurants in Cape Town

With just a few days to go before Ramadan ends, you might be all tuckered out from cooking up a storm. Why not take a break from the heat of your kitchen and revel in these great Iftaar specials with the whole family?

Atlantic Express Train Restaurant (Sea Point)
This landmark is cosy and family-friendly, offering an Iftaar special of a three-course meal for two for R199, with complimentary falooda and dates on arrival. For starters, choose between mushroom soup, a cheesy garlic roll or a variety plate. A choice of four mains is on offer: Thai green chicken curry served with rice or paratha; mini T-bone steak (200 g) with fries and veg; a baked potato with cheese and mushroom sauce; or a quarter chicken with fries and veggies. End it off on a sweet note with the Atlantic pancake. For bookings, call 071 134 2134.

Bo-Kaap Kombuis (Bo-Kaap)
Specialising in traditional Cape Malay cuisine, the humble Bo Kaap Kombuis will make you feel right at home. The special for R150 per person (half-price for kids under 10 and free for kids under 6) features favourites like soups, samoosas and chilli bites star as starters. As for mains, look forward to a good old Cape Malay curry and roti, or dishes like pasta if you’re not in the mood for something spicy. End off your meal with malva pudding and koeksisters with your choice of tea or coffee.

Hartley’s is a strictly Halaal restaurant located in Wynberg offering an all-you-can-eat Iftaar buffet. Feast on everything from grilled prawns to spare ribs and creamy mussels. The standard buffet costs R125 per person (R75 for kids under 13 and R55 for those under six); R145 with bottomless drinks (R95 for kids under 13 and R75 for under sixes); or you can throw in dessert for R165 each (R115 for kids under 13 and R95 for under sixes).

Situated in the heart of the Mother City, On the Square at The Capetonian is offering an Iftaar buffet comprising all the traditional favourites (and more) for R135 each. Break your fast with a refreshing falooda and dates, and eat your way to starters like warm soups and samoosas. For the mains, the focus is on traditional foods like curries (mopped up with fresh naan), but other things like pastas and stir-fries can be enjoyed, too. Be sure to keep space for dessert, which features the likes of koeksisters, malva puds and cheesecake. The special is available daily until the end of Ramadan from 5.30 to 10pm.

For R145 per person (R75 for kids under 12), Truffle’s Iftaar buffet includes everything from soups to ribs and chocolate brownies. For starters, have a warm bowl of soup (it changes daily – think chicken and corn, hearty vegetable and butternut soup) or a seasonal salad if you prefer something lighter. Next, tuck into grilled peri-peri chicken, barbecue-basted ribs, wild mushroom pasta or the curry of the day served with rice. Dessert features a decadent Lindt chocolate brownie, traditional malva and a simple vanilla-bean ice cream. The special is available daily until the end of Ramadan from 5.45 to 8pm.
