Beats and eats – restaurants that are serious about serving up good tunes in Pretoria

Café Barcelona (Colbyn)

An intimate venue on Thomas Street, Café Barcelona is known for its delectable food, laidback vibe and live music performances. From Wednesday to Friday, patrons can listen to acoustic music, while enjoying pizzas, light meals and Portuguese dishes. On Saturdays and select Sunday afternoons, Café Barcelona hosts live performances by local artists who play a mix of acoustic, R&B and folk music, to suit the mood and weekend vibe. Patrons can find the list of live music performances on the venue’s social media page. Café Barcelona has no age restrictions, but reservations are recommended on weekends and can be made by calling 012 430 2495. Café Barcelona is open on Monday and Tuesday from 8am to 6pm and from Wednesday to Saturday from 8am to 9pm.

Rafters Pub (Mooikloof Ridge)

Featuring a big screen for sporting events, a dance floor, plus live music and DJs, Rafters Pub located at the corner of Garsfontein Road and Blesbok Street is the right place to go to if you’re looking for live entertainment and wholesome pub grub. From Tuesday to Thursday, diners can listen to ’80s classics, Afrikaans and R&B music and also request for their favourite tracks to be played. On Fridays and Saturdays, Rafters Pub has live music performances by local artists, as well as DJs who play groovy music for patrons on the dance floor. Apart from the pizzas, burgers, fish and chips and breakfast items which are popular, Rafters Pub is also famous for its massive T-bone steaks. Additionally, the restaurant has a separate boma area which can be booked for private braais or special events. Rafters Pub has no age restrictions and reservations are not required, but can be made by calling 071 610 2132. Rafters Pub is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 9am to 11pm, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 1am and Sunday and Monday from 9am to 7pm.

JARR Bar & Restaurant (Weavind Park)

With a name that stands for ‘Just a Rock ’n’ Roll’ bar, JARR Bar & Restaurant on Ripley Street is adequately outfitted for live music performances by local rock bands. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, diners can enjoy foot-thumping rock music, while knocking back a few chilled craft beers or cocktails and tucking into burgers, steaks, pizzas, wraps, loaded fries, chicken schnitzels and more. On Thursdays, JARR hosts a ‘Storyteller’s Night’ where local performing artists talk about their music in an interactive session, while on Fridays and Saturdays the venue hosts live band performances, where patrons can sway to rock ’n’ roll, alternative rock, Indie or heavy metal music. The ‘Sunday Vibes’ Sundays features live acoustic shows with more chilled vibes. Patrons under 16 years are not permitted entry to the death metal shows. Reservations are recommended for bigger shows (which can be viewed on the restaurant’s social media pages) and can be made by calling 079 153 5295. JARR Bar & Restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 12am.

Shovels Pub and Grill (Wapadrand)

A live music bar on Wapadrand Road, Shovels Pub and Grill is a popular meeting spot and is well known for its happening vibe, draught beers, beer and braai specials, jaffles, sandwiches, steaks, bunny chow – and its live music performances. From Monday to Thursday, Shovels Pub plays Afrikaans, ’80s classics and rock music. Every Friday, there are different local artists performing on the premises and the dance floor is open to patrons. On weekends, music is played to suit the mood of customers, but usually veers towards Afrikaans music and old-school classics. Patrons under 18 years are not permitted at Shovels Pub. Reservations are not required, but can be made by calling 012 492 6030. Shovels Pub and Grill is open from Monday to Sunday from 10am to 2am.
