Boers, Brits and dog biscuits

Recently, we decided to do some exploring to find restaurants that allow you to bring your furry, four-legged friend along when eating out (see the full list here). We were pleasantly surprised with what we found and even amazed at the effort that some eateries put in to ensure that your pooch has just as pleasant a dining experience as you do.

The Boer & Brit, located at the Alphen Hotel in Constantia, is one of these pooch-friendly places. And what a darling little establishment it is. Reminiscent of a traditional British pub inside, it also offers lovely seating under umbrellas and ancient oak trees along a paved verandah. They're proud of being dog-friendly, so don't be surprised when you see a number of canine companions lying under the tables. They have a dedicated Dog Menu, which offers a number of tasty treats for your pet. Choose from dog biscuits (packs of 3), dried sausage, smoked pig's ear (a delicacy for most discerning hounds) or a choice of an organic chicken, beef or mutton Vondi's meal. All options cost R10 each. The latter is a healthy combination of meat, vegetables and rice, and is presented to said pooch in a stainless steel dog bowl, complete with basil leaf garnish. It's quite a generous portion but, if your best friend can't manage it all, they're more than happy to send you away with a doggie bag.

Whilst your dog dines in style, you can choose from a delicious pub-style menu so that you don't feel left out. The red chicken and prawn curry is fantastic, as are the salads and ciabattas. On a chilly day, try the country mushroom soup, served in a crusty bread bowl.
