Chef Aren Pollack bids farewell to Embarc to start a new chapter in the Cape

AREN POLLACK

Eat Out Rising Star Award winner Aren Pollack has announced his departure from Embarc, the 4th Ave Parkhurst restaurant he helped elevate to Eat Out star status in a remarkably short time.

Reflecting on his time at the restaurant – described as “modern, trendy dining” Aren acknowledges the team effort behind its success. “I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved as a team,” he says. “The greatest reward was seeing guests return because they trusted us to create something memorable every time.”

The 24-year-old chef credits the Rising Star accolade with reinforcing his commitment to hard work and consistency. “Receiving the Eat Out Rising Star Award was incredibly humbling. It reinforced that hard work, curiosity, and consistency are worth pursuing. Rather than feeling like a destination, it’s motivated me to keep learning, refining my craft, and staying true to the kind of food I want to cook.”

Chef Thabo Phake will take the reins at Embarc, and Aren is confident the restaurant is in capable hands. “I hope he puts his own stamp on the restaurant while building on what Embarc has become. Restaurants are always evolving, so I’m sure guests can expect to see some changes over time while still enjoying the quality and experience Embarc is known for,” says Aren. Thabo is no stranger to the Embarc team – having been mentored by owner Darren O’Donovan when he first started out as a student.

And what’s next for Aren? He confirms exciting plans are underway with a move to Paarl later this year to open a new restaurant. He promises more details soon. “It’s an exciting new journey, and I can’t wait for people to see what’s coming next.”
