Is your sweet tooth raging for gratification? Good news: we have the skinny on a new spot that will make all your sweet dreams come true.

The duo behind The Velvet Cake Co go by the mantra “celebrate everyday”. This is a sentiment close to our hearts – especially if it means we can have our cake and eat it too. Sisters Jandri and Carla Uys believe in creating extraordinary cakes with that special ‘wow’ factor which will captivate any cake gourmand. What started out as a charming patisserie called Treat in the Northern Suburbs back in 2010 has now evolved into a cake company with two branches: the first in Rosenpark in Bellville near Tygervalley, and this new branch in the heart of the CBD, on Loop Street (right next to the newly opened Giulio’s Café).

On the menu are dramatic naked rainbow cakes, which comprise six layers of colourful buttermilk cake with cream cheese frosting spread on layer upon layer; Sweetie Pie cupcakes; red velvet and cheesecake combo cakes; and red velvet cakes swathed in layers of Italian merignue. If you prefer to eat your cake with a spoon, there are also cake cups. Try a rainbow cup, with layers of brightly coloured cake between layers of cream cheese icing; a lemon meringue cup; or a chocolate caramel cup with chocolate cream cheese icing and caramel treat.

Other occasional specialities include pinotage-and-cinnamon cake, milk tart cake, Ferrero Rocher hazelnut cake, zucchini cake, whoop-whoop cake (made with crepes and custard), and candyfloss cake.

If that all sounds a little overwhelming, we’re pleased to report that they also sell savouries such as quiches – think biltong and blue cheese, or salmon and cream cheese.

There are a few seats in their Loop Street store where you can sit and sip on a coffee while you wait, but it’s more of a pick-up-and-go spot.
