Cape Town: Where to eat with your kids this winter

Looking for respite from the Mother City’s rainy and windy days? These spots offer cosy indoor areas that cater to keeping the whole family happy with playgrounds, arts and crafts activities, and build-your-own pizza stations. Here’s where to dine with the kids this winter in Cape Town.

Blanko at The Alphen Boutique Hotel (Constantia)?

Blanko may seem too fancy a place to unleash the littlies, but on Sundays they welcome the whole brood with open arms. The restaurant has partnered with Bazinga Parties to bring the kids fun games and entertainment like face painting and arts and crafts in a supervised play area. Adults are kept happy with live jazz and a lazy Sunday lunch. To eat, the kids’ menu features simple options like burgers and fish and chips.

Blasters Family Restaurant (Brackenfell)

This family-friendly spot is dedicated to keeping the little ones happy and entertained. The restaurant is designed with the whole family in mind, with a supervised and safe play area as well as easy-going grub for parents. The kids’ corner is indoors and comes equipped with a fun ocean-themed play area and a jungle gym. In the holidays the restaurant also puts on live shows featuring talented youngsters. Shows include Cat in The Hat, Frozen and Minions.

Café Paradiso (Gardens)?

This cosy Gardens spot is known for serving hearty simple fare like antipasti platters, comforting pastas and rich risottos. To keep the tiny tots busy, the restaurant offers special food-themed kids’ projects in the warm kitchen until 8pm. These include icing cupcakes, decorating gingerbread men and making pizza. There are also child-minders to keep an eye on them.

Clay Café (Hout Bay)

When it’s miserable outside, take your little ones out for some creative fun at this arty Hout Bay spot. The lunches are lovely and you can spend a lazy day painting clay crockery with the whole family. There’s even a fireplace inside to keep everyone cosy and happy. On the all-day menu, enjoy a range of café-style food like eggy breakfasts, burgers, pizzas, paninis and pastas. The tots can munch on baby pizzas, spaghetti and crispy chicken strips. This also makes for a great birthday party spot.

The Clubhouse (Constantia)

The warmth and family-friendly nature of this popular Constantia restaurant are two of its biggest drawcards. The venue has a fireplace, TV screens for exciting live sport games, and a supervised play area for your littlies. The movie room will keep them cosy and occupied while you enjoy live music and comforting classics like pies, lamb shanks, pizzas and more.

Jerry’s Burger Bar (Blouberg)

Enjoy damn good burgers while the kiddies enjoy the fun play area at this burger joint. There’s a television, DVDs and games to keep them occupied as well as colouring-in activities to keep them entertained at the table. Keep their little tums satisfied with burgers and hotdogs.

Spiro’s (Hout Bay)

Greek food and ample child-friendly entertainment will keep the whole family happy here. The two play areas include a cosy indoor playroom – with a child minder – where the little ones can enjoy playing dress-up as well as crafts, games and movies. Tuck into a range of mezze and keep the kiddies’ hunger pangs at bay with easy nibbles like calamari, ribs, chicken souvlaki or fish cakes.

Strolla (Sea Point)

Keep warm after a brisk promenade walk at this Sea Point spot with breakfasts, Bootlegger coffee and pizzas. The indoor dining area is beautifully decorated and cosy, offering the sweetest little kids’ corner. Here the little ones can make their own pizzas under the watchful eye of child minders, or they can cosy up in the playroom with games and a television.
