Edgars opens its first café – with a surprising menu

You might wonder what – if anything – fashion retailer Edgars knows about food, but the menu of its first-ever cafe looks to prove any doubters wrong. The brand teamed up with Famous Brands to launch this new concept, entitled Made Café, inside the Edgars store in Eastgate Mall, Johannesburg, at the end of last month.

While Made Café is intended to create a new experience for customers that infuses fashion and food, it seems like the focus is firmly on what’s on the plate. Visitors can look forward to coffee and light deli-style bites like pastries, as well as sandwiches, light breakfast, salads and more serious lunches.

We haven’t visited just yet, but the highlights of the menu could be the likes of open omelettes with fillings like salmon, basil pesto and cream cheese, and eggs Benedict for breakfast; salads with ingredients like charred pumpkin and ricotta; and, for bigger appetites, sticky barbecue ribs with apple-and-pear chutney, a beef burger with onion bhaji, cauliflower melt topped with blue cheese, and salt-and-pepper calamari with a lime-jalapeno sauce. Samoosas, biltong, parmesan crisps, and beetroot and sweet-potato kettle fries keep things interesting in the savoury snacks department.

If you’re into the more naughty side of drinks, they have some pretty intriguing-sounding milkshakes on the menu. Think variations like Ferrero Rocher, with hazelnut spread and peanut brittle; Cookies & Cream made with Oreos; and a playful Berry & Candyfloss option.
