Get your burgers, bagels and doughnuts at this new butchery on Loop Street in Cape Town

A newcomer butchery in Hout Bay, Orion Provisions, has expanded to the Cape Town City Bowl with an eatery and shop called Orion on Loop. The menu offers bagels, burgers and doughnuts right alongside the butchery’s cured-meat offering.

Though only having opened in October 2017, Orion Provisions has quickly become known in Hout Bay for locally sourced meat, available fresh or in sausages, biltong and droëwors. When the opportunity arose to expand into the city, the team (previously of Devil’s Peak Taproom) jumped at it. They knew they would sell a small selection of the meats available at the Hout Bay branch, but also wanted Orion on Loop to be an eatery in its own right. Burgers and bagels sprang to mind as the best way to showcase their meat products.

Pop in from 8am to grab a bagel; you could go with plain cream cheese, or add egg and bacon. Alternatively, go for one of the fancier combinations of fillings like marinated tuna, cream cheese and wasabi mayo; slow-cooked pork, pickled onions and coriander; or strips of rare fillet with caramelised onions and wasabi mayo.

Burgers are available from 11am and come in variations like Moroccan lamb, chorizo or Thai pork. Look forward to toppings of emmenthaler cheese, pickles, ketchup and mustard mayo on beef patties; pickled red onions, harissa mayo and pea-and-mint pesto on lamb patties; and pickled cabbage, fresh apple and sriracha mayo on pork patties. Each burger is served with fries or a salad, and is priced between R71 and R89. You can also select a cut of meat from the fridge and have it with salad or fries. Wash it all down with coffee or freshly squeezed juice.

As for the doughnuts, you’ll have to ask about the daily selection, but flavours could include the likes of caramel sea salt, whipped banana and double chocolate. Yum.

Orion on Loop is open Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm and might possibly open on Saturdays soon. Stay tuned to Eat Out for developments.
