The fine folks who brought us Lenin’s Vodka Bar in Maboneng have opened up a new showpiece Tyrone Avenue in Parkview called Blind Tiger Café. It’s a 1920s-style space that seats 80, with good-looking and -tasting food, and cocktails to match.

Owner Roman Slepica, who grew up in Parkview himself, has had other restaurant ventures around Joburg and across the globe, including San Francisco and Prague, which is where his family originated. Now he and his Californian wife, Tanya, have created this new glamorous place decorated in deep crimson.

At Blind Tiger they know what kind of food works and how to deliver it. Off the menu of what could be called Californian cuisine you can order mash-ups of Asian, Mexican and American tastes. Share dishes like a black-bean-and-onion quesadilla with tomato and sour cream; New-Orleans-style brie baguette with caramelised onions and apples; Korean chicken wings with honey-and-lime sriracha; and tempura of shrimp and green beans with ginger dipping sauce. For dessert, the flourless chocolate cake will take your breath – and words – away.

For liquid refreshment, dip into 1920s-style Giggle Waters like the Great Gatsby (Inverroche gin, elderflower cordial and sour mix, topped with tonic and a cute maraschino cherry) and WooWoo (vodka, Archers schnapps and cranberry). There are also glorious cocktails like the Sidecar, Manhattan, and an already-legendary Bloody Mary that could well feature on the brunch menu, which will launch in July.
