Heavenly design

Mother city breakfast and lunch spot, Hemelhuijs opened last October to rave reviews, both for its heavenly comfort food and its chic, contemporary design. The first of our nominees for our brand new Boschendal Style Award, at this year's Eat Out awards, do they have what it takes?

The mood: cutting edge and cosy at the same time, the trendy dark grey walls are warmed up with cheeky faux-vintage pieces. There’s a play on grandma’s drawing room at work here.

The designer: “We wanted to create a simple, almost zen-like feeling, without being cold,” says Jacques Erasmus. “We’re always changing the crockery and the flowers, so it’s an evolving space.” Along with friend and business partner, Neil Stemmet, Jacques is also the man behind Koncept Design, Architecture and Interiors; a company which focuses on creating old world beauty with a contemporary kick. Jacques recently designed 26 chandeliers for the Cape Grace, and has had a hand in Cuvee’s design too.

The details: the chic charcoal crockery is Jacques own range, as are the retro wooden chairs and tables. We also love the reindeer head, mounted on the walls, holding broken shards of crockery in its antlers. “The deer’s head is a European antique that I bought a while ago, and the crockery was to add a bit of humour,” says Jacques. He’s also behind the whimsical illustration hovering on the ceiling above the central table. “It was supposed to be like a child, putting together a menu, or encountering a cookbook for the first time and making notes.”

The food: From hearty risottos and feather light gnocchi, to burgers resting on ciabatta, the dishes are as stylish as they are tasty. Rustically plated, they’re not in the least pretentious, yet still manage to be beautiful.
