Hip, inner-city market The Sheds@1Fox reopened today after being closed over the Christmas period for renovations. Located in a maze of Ferreirastown mining warehouses dating from the 1890s, the market opened up last year to rave reviews. Now, says facilities manager Lisa Walker, the plan is to expand the brand, and open four different spaces under the 1Fox name.
The Market Shed has been renovated to become a single space for all the prepared food stalls, and there is also more space for retail products, with large island stands selling fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses, oysters, fresh produce, confectionery and dessert.
A bakery is currently being built, but the bakers are already selling their wares (baked offsite) until the building is finished. A permanent restaurant is also in the works, slated to open in March 2015.
The Good Luck Bar Shed, a craft beer hall with selected vendors, doubles as the live music space, with entertainment every Thursday.
The organisers are also planning to open a braai courtyard, where visitors can experience barbecue from different cultures, such as Argentinian dishes, Southern pulled pork and shisa nyama. Guests will be able to order food from the stalls and find a seat in the courtyard to tuck in. There will be a sandpit for kids, too.
Other live events already on the cards include a free performance by outspoken American singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer on Friday 30 January 2015, a Valentine’s Day performance by the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, conducted by Richard Cock, and a Chinese New Year celebration on 21 February. The organisers will also continue to host the popular movie nights.
The Market Shed is open on Fridays from 12 noon to 8pm; Saturdays from 8am to 6pm; and Sundays from 8am to 4pm. The Good Luck Bar Shed operates on Thursdays from 4pm to 9.30pm; Fridays from 12 noon to 9.30pm; Saturdays from 10am to 9.30pm; and Sundays from 10am to 6pm. The entire The Sheds@1Fox space stays open until 10 pm on the last Friday of the month.
