Where to host your year-end function in Pretoria

The close of the year has finally come and, with it, that time of year that some are absolutely delighted by or completely dread – the annual staff year-end function. Here’s a nifty list of restaurants that can accommodate bookings for big groups of people.

Alfie’s Pizzeria (Hazelwood) ?
For a more relaxed setting, Alfie’s Pizzeria sets the scene for a laid-back Italian pizza experience, never losing focus on their impressive use of top imported deli fare and deliciously fresh local produce. Situated on the Hazelwood foodie strip, Alfie’s carries a vibe all on its own. Corkage costs just R45, so you’re welcome to bring your own special tipple if you want to. If you try anything here, make sure it’s the absolutely delicious ortolana pizza with mushrooms, artichokes, fresh tomatoes, baby marrow, Kalamata olives and olive oil. There’s also a lovely range of traditional Italian desserts available.

Altitude (Menlyn)
Altitude is a buzzing restaurant by day and an equally vibrant bar (complete with a resident DJ) in the evenings. Equipped to host events, the highly capable staff at Altitude are trained to handle larger crowds. The Afro-Asian fusion restaurant has a fairly traditional food offering, with dishes like grilled chicken trinchado and biltong-and-strawberry salad to be expected. Altitude boasts a hefty drinks menu to suit almost every taste there is – one of the signature cocktails, the Lady Altitude, is the biggest hit, featuring Don Julio tequila, Aperol, orange syrup and pineapple juice.

Culture Club (Hazelwood)
If yours is a smaller, more intimate group with a taste for all things Mediterranean, then be sure to book your table of up to 20 guests here. The quaint, Greek Island-inspired interiors and alfresco mood will certainly put everyone in the holiday spirit. The vast selection of craft gins, tonics and tapas makes this an ideal place to share the closing moments of the working year. The charcuterie and cheese boards contain some of the world’s finest cheeses, charcuterie and preserves. A popular choice on the tapas menu is the crispy salt-and-pepper squid (R65), which is absolutely mouth-watering when paired up with the delicious chimichurri coleslaw (R25). Culture Club also has a positively impressive wine list, with wines like AA Badenhorst Papegaai chenin blanc blend for R135 per bottle and R36 per glass, or Graham Beck Bliss for R300 per bottle and R62 per glass. There are plenty by-the-glass options and the staff are efficient and helpful in guiding you through the large menu.
