Italian forever…

Pizzeria Napoletana, in Sea Point, Cape Town, has been serving authentic Italian food for 50 years – same family (Luigi and Maria Parletta), same food, same décor. Eat Out web browser, Dave Saunders, tells us why he loves it.

Pizzeria Napoletana, serving honest authentic Italian food, first opened its door in July 1957. A 50th celebration lies ahead later this year in July. Little has changed over time. The venue is the same, the décor is the same, the family is the same, the menu is virtually the same, if ever a restaurant was worthy of heritage status, this is it!

Expect substantial servings of authentic Italian food in a retro café environment. Close your eyes and you’ll hear Tony Soprano’s voice wafting from the next table. Piero serves the tastiest and must succulent veal to be found in Cape Town. Try the Veal Maria, it’s a certain winner. The mussels in cream, garlic and white wine are worth a visit alone, and the Linefish ala Romano is a pleasant alternative to most of the dry and overcooked fish one finds in the restaurants of Cape Town.

Maria’s (the family’s matriarch) homemade Italian cake is must if you have space left, though it’s highly unlikely you will. Piero is the best cappuccino maker in the Western Cape, if you don’t believe me ask any Giovanni’s regular, cause that’s where you’ll find him during the day, so if you’re very lucky you might be able to coax him out of his very busy kitchen to complete your meal with a personalised cup.
