The Melting Pot finds new permanent spot in De Waterkant

MELTING POT

After closing its Oak Valley restaurant – where it operated from 2020 to 2024 and earned Eat Out stars in both 2022 and 2023 – The Melting Pot is preparing to launch in a new permanent space. The brand, which started as a pop-up in 2019 – born from chef-owner John van Zyl and his partner Sage Fell’s wanderlust and love for global flavours – will open at 137 Waterkant Street, De Waterkant, Cape Town.

While the core Melting Pot philosophy remains – a “trip around the world in one sitting” – the De Waterkant location will expand into new territory. “We’re introducing a breakfast and lunch offering too, as it suits the location perfectly,” John told Eat Out, acknowledging what anyone who’s walked Waterkant Street at 8am knows – this neighbourhood wakes up early!

The menu is taking shape, starting with The Melting Pot cult favourites, and as always, John suggests trying One of Everything. Diners can expect the signature global, adventurous flavours that define The Melting Pot, with dishes inspired by travel, stories and exploration.

The space itself will reflect their warm, welcoming vibe: unpretentious, comfortable and inviting, blending raw, modern and industrial elements. A key feature is the rooftop terrace with an attached bar, perfect for enjoying food, drinks and city views.

The team plans to grow into a seven-day operation, focusing on quality and hospitality over rush. Trading hours and online bookings will be finalised in line with creating the best experience for guests.

It’s clear that The Melting Pot team seems focused on substance over spectacle – getting the food right, creating genuine hospitality and building something sustainable in a very tough and competitive industry. It’s proof that good concepts, handled thoughtfully, can find new life in different spaces.

We cannot wait to visit!
