My week of Mexican

Last week, my beady eye spotted a delicious little spot that I thought you might like to know about. It’s an authentic Mexican eating house that’s run by a wonderful Mexican family who have been here for just four months.

San Julian is nestled down Rose Street just down from the Bo Kaap. I had been dying to go all week, and my family and I decided that we were in the mood early on Saturday evening. The menu is a work in progress because some of the essential ingredients, such as tomatillos, poblano and chipotle chillies are still being grown by local suppliers.

We devoured plates of soft homemade corn tortillas, spread with guacamole and minced beef and topped with roasted chilli sauce and a proper green salsa. There wasn’t a dollop of sour cream or yellow cheese in sight when the nachos arrived, but rather a thin bean sauce and a smooth cheese one scattered with pickled veggies. There were also chargrilled quesadillas oozing chicken and cheese, served with a little red rice on the side.

Our kids danced in the window as someone played the guitar and we sipped agave nectar – very good tequila.

Buen provecho!
