New Parisian pâtisserie opens at Joburg’s 1Fox

After his success on The Great South African Bake Off, contestant Teddy Zaki couldn’t wait to open up his dream French-style bakery in Johannesburg. Just Teddy is now open, serving up classic pastries and bakes at The Sheds at 1Fox in Ferreirasdorp.

Teddy was first inspired when his son, Jeffrey Teddy Zaki, opened his flagship Pionieri Pizzeria store at the newly rebuilt market shed at no. 1 Fox street. Teddy spotted a vacant corner space that was begging to be transformed into something special.

Just Teddy offers market goers treats inspired by those Teddy savoured on his travels. Visitors can expect flavours and bakes that are influenced by traditional French treats, such as the signature madeleines (which have sold out every market day since the opening), almond friands, financiers, assorted French tarts, canelés and a Lebanese sweet treat or two thrown in.

Croissants and assorted Danish pastries are baked every morning at 4am to greet the early birds, while artisanal breads including bagels, rye and ciabatta loaves adorn the wooden display. To complement the bakes, Teddy and the team also offer a tea box filled with exotic and speciality blends.

In the future customers can look forward to a selection of macarons and choux pastry items from simple, custard-filled chouquettes to elaborate towers of croquembouche.
