Where to order homemade pastas in Durban

There’s no shortage of homely Italian spots in the east coast city of Durban, and these gems are all known for plating up silky homemade pastas for that true taste of Italy. From lasagne to creamy pappardelle, here’s where to order the best homemade pastas around the city.

The Glenwood Bakery (Glenwood)
While master baker and chef Adam Robinson’s Glenwood Restaurant is closed, he still brings a little taste of his expertly made pastas to this corner bakery in the evenings. Look out for his superb gnocchi with bacon and peas; mezzalune pockets filled with spinach and ricotta with sage butter; squid ink tagliatelle with mussels; or open ravioli with ratatouille, olives and basil.

La Casa Nostra (Umdloti)
This cosy trattoria in Umdloti has been consistently keeping locals happy for years. When it comes to freshly made pastas, the panzerotti and gnocchi are the order of the day. The former comes filled with either fresh ricotta and spinach or pumpkin and mushroom. Choose from an array of sauces to pair with your pasta, including creamy napolitana, spicy beef mince and gorgonzola.

Lupa Osteria (Durban North)
The Lupa teams make their fettuccine and spaghetti on site daily. The strands are even extruded through a die cutter made from bronze to create a rougher texture that allows the pasta to grip more sauce. Pick from hearty sauces like the Forrestiera with mushrooms, cream and brandy; slow-cooked Bolognese with a touch of cream; and the marinara with prawns, calamari, mussels, tomato and fennel cream plus a hint of chilli.

Mamma Luciana’s (Glenashley)
Mamma’s has had the homemade tagliatelle and filled pastas on the menu since inception and with good reason. Enjoy yours with a medley of seafood tossed in olive oil, chilli, tomato and a white wine and cream sauce; with a meaty Bolognese; or with homemade Italian meatballs.

Old Town Italy (Umhlanga)
The homemade pastas here include tagliatelle and pappardelle. Enjoy them enrobed in a rich Bolognese ragu; a creamy mushroom and truffle oil sauce; or one with cream, lemon, peas, prosciutto and mushrooms.
