Food

A sexy, Caribbean hotspot in one of Joburg’s trendiest neighbourhoods.

Brian Lara Rum Eatery takes inspiration from the tropical shores of the West Indies but has made its menu accessible to the South African palate. Whether you’re in the mood for chicken, steak or seafood, the menu includes exciting options such as jerk chicken, seafood curry and a very flavourful mussel pan served with toasted bread to mop up the buttery broth. The lamb skewers are particularly good – tender lamb cubes with red onion and red bell peppers in a spicy jerk seasoning. The fattiness of the lamb is perfectly offset by a fresh summer salad. Vegans will love a fresh take on traditional Trinidadian doubles – a lentil curry with pineapple slaw and flatbread.

Drinks

Cocktails are the name of the game here and you won’t be disappointed with a tropical piña colada served in a pineapple, or a lime-spiked mai tai reinforced with rum. You’ll want to go full Jack Sparrow! The wine list is limited, and available by the glass or bottle. There is a range of white, red, rose and bubbly, but it is evident that cocktails are the order of the day.

Service

Making a reservation is easy and you’re warmly welcomed on arrival. The complimentary fried dough and salsa placed on each table is a great touch and makes a nice change from the usual bread basket. The waiters are fun, attentive and talkative but never intrusive. They are well informed about the menu and make helpful suggestions.

Ambience

Brian Lara has a tropical vibe perfect for after-work drinks, date nights, dinner with friends or even a Tinder meet-up. The décor will transport you to a balmy, beach café and you will swear you can almost hear the waves crashing outside, an incredible feat in the heart of Joburg. The mood is casual and fun; you can really let your hair down and have a great time. Great for dates or after-work drinks.
