Review: Salt Eatery in Hazelwood will make you want to rewind and try it all again

Salt Eatery is without a doubt the most refreshing food experience to hit Pretoria in years.

Food

Owner/chef Wessel van Jaarsveld draws on his experience in fine dining establishments in Europe and the UK to present a modern, inspired and innovative menu that is at once iconic and addictive. The regularly changing menu offers charcuterie, cheese, bread and condiments, allowing you to create your own board of delicious artisanal snacks.

Interesting options include pear and saffron chutney, asiago and calabrese cheese, and fugasse and pain de paysan breads. The real stars of the show, however, can be found on the ‘Plates, sides & sliders’ section of the menu. Try the home-cured salmon, horseradish and soy mousse with dill pearls; oxtail-stuffed squid; or the steamed pork bun with Asian slaw and kumquat chutney – all outstanding dishes, packed with flavour and creatively plated. The slider menu features some instant classics, too: try the grilled mushroom, cep and truffle sauce with gorgonzola, or grilled beef with bacon and gruyère. Wonderful, interesting side dishes like parmesan and black truffle fries, courgette ribbons with compound butter, and savoy cabbage with black bacon make you wish you could rewind and try everything again.

This is a great option for breakfast as well, with dishes like confit duck hash, frozen yoghurt terrine and brioche French toast. This amazing little bistro is the perfect place to sit and eat all day.

Drinks

There’s an interesting if limited selection of MCCs, as well as Earthbound Organic Wines, and local red and whites. There’s not much selection of wine by the glass; however, they stock an excellent craft beer offering.

Service

Attentive and effective service from a small, snappy front-of-house team.

Ambience

Informal and relaxed. This double-volume, semi-industrial space provides a blank canvas for Wessel and his team to wow you with their wonderful food.

And…

Ask about their much talked-about function catering service if you are planning a special event at home.
