Owner's description

The Karoo Café offers a kind of environment, a habitat similar to that we find in nature. Living consciously, the experience of simple beauty, culture as a way of life and ultimately personal happiness. During the day the Karoo Café Restaurant functions as a tea garden or coffee shop. It is a different kind of environment, it’s a relaxed stress-free place where you can be yourself. At night the whole place transforms into something of a bush fairy tale, a romantic atmosphere, you can feel something special in the air. It is the perfect place to relax, read some books, admire the art or work on your laptop. A habitat similar to that we find in nature.

Karoo Cafe has always been one of my favorites. I can honestly say that I never had a bad experience here. They recently went under new management. My parents took friends out for breakfast there just after that, and they had a very bad time, with small portions, favorites not being available etc. However, I can say that they are back to the awesome place I have come to love. The ambience is amazing. I ordered one of my favorite dishes, the Fusion Chicken, and it was the decent sized and very tasteful plate of food made to the high standards that I associate with them. The service was very good, and my food and coffee arrived quite quickly and the staff checked up regularly.
So frustrated! Went to celebrate a birthday. Poor service, no sauce on ostrich steaks as stated on the menu, not cooked as requested. Had to send mine back to the kitchen because I couldn’t stomach it in that state. Veggies over cooked, ice cream melted. Most disappointing. Have had much better in the past.
My wife and I visited Karoo cafe on 3 August 2017 for lunch dead hungry. Due to a very busy schedule we did not have breakfast. Waited for approximately 45 minutes for our food had to ask the waitress what the reason for the delay was. She didn"t even bother to come to us ! The manager Vincent also did not see it fit to ask us if all was in order. At last the food came after we complained , My wife ordered the steak medium to well but it was bloody and rare! She sent it back and we could not even eat together! When the steak was brought back it was still rare and tough as nails @, wait for it R138.00 Spoke to the manager and ask him for the owner's details he did not have it
I was extremely excited and then equally disappointed when I finally got to visit the Karoo Café. The service was adequate, the food enjoyable. Unfortunately we were not able to experience the ambience as advertised, since we are part of the much-frowned-upon-group called “smokers”. I respect and abide all smoking laws. However when I booked a table in the “smoking-area” I was not nearly prepared for what was to come. Obviously I did not expect to be placed inside on the luxurious couches. We expected to be placed outside on the patio, in the shade, overlooking the water features and beautiful garden (as seen the gallery pictures on their website). Nonetheless there, cooped up in a secluded corner, behind the main building, between the disregarded trees and what seemed to be the back door, stood our “table”. The ruthlessly uncomfortable furniture (calling it furniture is being more than lenient), was mostly broken, and did not create the ambience you would see throughout the rest of Karoo Café. The area was disheveled, dull and I kept staring at the plastic bags and containers trapped between the trees. I realize that due to legislation, they most likely do not have another area available, other than this one, to convert to a smoking area. However I would think that they would at least attempt to convert it from the area-for- discarded-storage-items to a homely café seating area. It is highly unlikely that we would return before the smoking area has been improve considerably.
The place for a steaming cup of specialised coffee and hearty breakfast. The restaurant is usually filled with a good mix of young and old - making it ideal for young families and the more mature crowd. Browse the book store section or the designer furniture if you feel like splashing out on more than a meal. The dogs are part of the furniture and aids in the homely vibe. Suggestion: Book in advance, especially for bigger groups/family groups.
