Owner's description

Welcome to Readers Restaurant. Purveyors of fine food since 1997  The oldest house in Church Street, Tulbagh, was built in 1754 for the ?Reader? or ?sick comforter? of the community.  In June 1997 Readers opened its doors to the public for the first time. Offering simple, yet outstanding local and global cuisine, Reader?s has been able to maintain a standard of excellence that has created a notable reputation with both locals and tourists. The cuisine varies on a daily basis depending on the availability of fresh produce.  This provides Carol Collins ? Silwood trained Cordon Bleu Chef -a certain challenge in ensuring the creation of dishes using imagination, flair and superb presentation. Certain dishes have become trademarks at Readers but the focus remains on variety, fusion of flavours and combination of unusual ingredients.

Continuing the stay in Tulbagh over the long weekend, a Monday (on a Public Holiday) lunch at Readers was awesome! Carol Collins, chef proprieter, was on hand offering personal suggestions and surprising and delighting all the way through. This is now the second time I have eaten there in two weeks, and a great experience with her touches to so many items. Like, her take on a pork chop, add some brie and local hannepoot grapes on top of large country styled succulent chops. Carol also has hidden wines (not on her list) that are amazing and she proudly supports the Tulbagh wine region. BUT, the GRAND finale is her savoury ice creams... I dare you to try the wasabi or curry ice cream. Superb - and do not forget to wonder and browse through her CAT BOUTIQUE.
