A place to be
The Steamworks is the my ultimate go-to restaurant in Jozi. Unfortunately, it’s everyone else’s too. It is a destination that is ‘perfect’ for pretty much everything, whether it’s some Action at the Bar, a Simple enjoyable lunch or dinner, Birthday party or Night Out. It’s decor is out of this world and the huge steamworks type of clock at the bar is one of a kind. It’s towering ceilings makes it feel like you’re dining in a sick loft space. The place is buzzing every night and the food is pretty happening as well! Every item on the menu leaves your mouth salivating and Craft Beer from around the world seals the deal.
So yeah, it’s not exactly stop-the-presses news that The Steamworks is GREAT and as much as I wanted to trash it to tamp down the crowds, I can’t! It is the place to GO!
What a cool place! Something different. Won't recommend eating there, not because the food is bad, but take quiet some time to prepare it. Not the place for a quick lunch but a quick drink. This funky place will definitely see us for more drinks with friends real soon.
I'm a big craft beer fan and read some of the reviews which seemed quite mixed, but decided to go and check it out for myself last night (saturday)
Initial impressions were very positive - place was busy and had a great vibe. Decor was unusual but gave it a unique feel and fitted in well to the theme.
A decent craft beer selection, both draft and bottles. There is a taster option, choice of 4 x 100mls from a list of beer, ale and ciders for only R33 - was a great way to sample before deciding what to quaff in earnest!
Onto main course selection..menu was limited but all really good choices, so no issue. I chose the fresh chicken pie with mash, my partner chose the burger and fries. To be honest I wasn't expecting too much but was very pleasantly surprised...pie and mash was delicious and I ended up sampling some of the burger - can honestly say it was one of the best burgers I've tried in a long time - full of flavour and very fresh.
We had a movie to catch so no time for dessert - probably a good thing as we were both already been stuffed...
Waitress was very helpful, attentive and friendly throughout - really made us feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble.
Overall, a really enjoyable experience throughout. Will I be back? Definitely! Think this will be our new weekend regular and would give a 5 star recommendation to anyone looking for an evening for good beers, great food, excellent service and a place with a buzz!
Steam works seemed more like a place where 21 year olds hang out and have a few too many beers and a bit of a joll than a restaurant. The service was extremely slow and we often waited for long periods without drinks or any attention from our waitor. When our food arrived it was dry , bland and a general diisapointment. When i pay 100 bucks for a gourmet burger i expect a little more than an overcooked meatball on a massive bun with a piece of cheese. The Lamb pie was extremely dry and salty and quite honestly a total let down.
