Linden, a formerly quiet neighbourhood in northern Johannesburg, has seemingly undergone quite a revival lately, with a recent crop of cool eateries and cafés setting up shop. Van der Linde is one such spot, and it houses a bakery and deli, as well as a wine-and-gin bar alongside the restaurant.

Food

The menu is relatively small and well put-together. It features a burger section with beef, chicken and veggie versions, as well as a number of smaller plates and interesting salads, including one with roasted cauliflower and sweet potato, butter beans and parmesan topped with a zingy dressing.

The ‘classics’ menu includes a chicken parm – featuring a parmesan-crusted chicken breast and fresh, homemade pappardelle tossed in a bright, tomato sauce. The salmon fishcakes, served alongside a simple green salad and aïoli, are tasty, with a strong salmon flavour and toasty crumb.

If you have space for it, dessert could take the shape of a freshly baked slice of cake, creme brûlée or poached stone fruit with an olive oil sabayon.

Drinks

The wine list is decent and features a number of well-known knockouts such as Adi Badenhorst’s Secateurs plus a selection from Springfield. On the beer side of things, there’s a limited offering of standard SAB brews, as well as a CBC and Devil’s Peak. They also have an extensive smoothie menu, fresh juices and soft drinks for those forgoing alcohol.

Service

The service is pleasant and efficient.

Ambience

The bright and airy restaurant seems to be a good meeting spot for people working in the area, so there’s a buzz coupled with an unexpectedly good view of Johannesburg’s iconic skyline.

And…

They have a small bonsai studio next door, where they offer classes, should you want to learn a skill before dinner.

    What an awesome place to eat at. With loadshedding and all. The food and drinks was amazing. Thank you for a very nice evening.
    Stellar restaurant in an amazing neighborhood with a great wine list and delicious meals, especially the sharing plates! Yum!
    Enjoyed our evening. Quite a limited menu, recommend the mushroom ravioli with truffle oil. A bit distracting is the large TV screen showing different towns and cities in the background
    We stopped for breakfast. They had a lovely harvest table on offer and some great options on the menu. I eill definitely be back to try lunch and dinner

    I'm so disappointed with Eat Out. We all went to that place at 7pm and they had find out that there is no confirmation booking by eat out. So they rearrange the table for 7 of us. Not going to use eat out app ever again.

    Tastefully decorated with nice touches such as monogrammed crockery. Food was fantastic (we had the sharing steak, perfectly cooked), however service was a little slow. All in all a great experience, and nice to have a smarter dining option in Linden.
    The small but creative menu was perfect for a Sunday lunch. Charcoal and sand with tones combined with an open kitchen and a funky bar sets the tone for the homely, understated elegance at Van der Linde. Older families, cool youngsters and even a few Linden old-timers in their Sunday best enjoyed the sharp and professional service. Taste combinations were simple, fresh and well presented. Our lunch included the VDL burger, salmon fishcakes, chicken parma and fried kabeljou. The rib eye steak was fantastic, probably one of the best steaks we have had this year. Nice wine list and some innovative signature cocktails, like the peanut butter bourbon with chocolate bitters. Leave space for the carrot cake and take home one of the freshly baked breads or criossants.
