Where to celebrate Mother’s Day on 14 May 2017

Mother’s Day is around the corner, which means it’s time to start planning an extra special way to celebrate. While it’s not always easy to find the perfect gift, we think a leisurely lunch at a wine farm or lavish six-course meal at her favourite restaurant should do the trick. The following restaurants across South Africa are offering special menus and activities for moms and their families on Sunday 14 May.

Johannesburg

A la Bouffe (Linden)

This popular restaurant will be hosting a French-inspired feast on Mother’s Day with a three-course menu at R205 per person. Moms are in for a treat, with starters of cauliflower soup with truffle oil; mains of roasted beef striploin or poached rainbow trout; and dessert options of chocolate mousse, apple beignets or a cheese board.

Carpe Diem (Sandton)
Carpe Diem Restaurant is offering moms, moms-in-law and grannies a free glass of wine at the table with lunch on Mother’s Day. Call 011 262 4465 to make a reservation.

Clico Restaurant (Rosebank)

Pay R385 per person for a decadent Mother’s Day four-course menu. (There is also an optional wine pairing at extra cost.) The dishes include butternut ravioli, mussel-and-basil risotto, chicken roulade with pearled barley, leeks and parsnip jus or lamb shoulder with pomme fondant, parsley croquette, almond cream and red wine jus. Dessert includes key-lime pie with lime, orange and chantilly cream.

The Fat Olive (Lanseria)

Enjoy a three-course lunch with live entertainment for R295 per person. The set menu includes a delicious lunch with live music in a beautiful country setting. Booking is essential on 071 354 6622.

Flames Restaurant (Jan Smuts Avenue)

Enjoy a Mother’s Day buffet brunch with a view on 14 May, starting from R595 per person. Booking is essential.

Moyo (Melrose Arch)

Pay R325 per adult and R185 for kids between the ages of four and 12 for a communal feast with live entertainment and a welcome cocktail. The set menu includes dishes like West Coast mussels in a curried cream broth, Durban lamb curry, a carvery with sides, and a self-service dessert buffet.

Moyo (Zoo Lake)

Indulge in a breakfast buffet with bottomless tea, filter coffee and juice for R145 per adult, R115 per pensioner, R75 for children aged between six and 11 years old, and at no charge for those aged five and younger. Buffet items will include assorted sliced fruit and fruit salad, assorted muffins, streaky bacon, breakfast lamb sausages, peri-peri chicken livers and self-service toast with strawberry and apricot jam. A lunch buffet is on offer as well at R295 per adult, R215 per pensioner, and R165 per child aged between six and eleven years old. Booking is essential

The Secret Tea Garden (Fourways)

Enjoy a hearty breakfast or lunch by choosing items from the à la carte menu. The menu includes smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with toast; jam scones served with cream; muffins; roasted lamb or chicken served with vegetables, roast potatoes, rice and gravy; and cake and coffee for dessert.

Pretoria

The Barn Restaurant at Irene Dairy Farm (Irene)

Express your appreciation with a traditional home-style Mother’s Day lunch buffet for R295 per person. The spread will include a range of salads, a carvery selection and a buffet of scrumptious desserts. Look forward to highlights like a creamy garlic-and-mussel pot, marinated and pot-roasted highveld beef sliced with a woodland mushroom-enhanced gravy, and homemade malva pudding with vanilla custard.

De Kloof (Waterkloof)

Treat your Mom to a four-course lunch with freshly baked bread and canapés on arrival at R395 per person. Children aged four to ten pay R155 for three courses. Highlights include harissa baked monkfish with basil gnocchi, octopus tentacle, crispy octopus, crisp tomato and olive dust, and a dark chocolate torte with white chocolate gelato and granadilla compote.

Kingsley’s Restaurant at Kievits Kroon Country Estate (Kameeldrift East)

Pay R350 per person for a lavish Mother’s Day lunch buffet with a complimentary glass of Kievits Kroon bubbly. You could also treat her to a mom’s getaway or spa treatment. Booking is essential.

Kloofzicht Lodge & Spa (Muldersdrift)

Say thank you to mom this Mother’s Day by spoiling her with a delicious Sunday lunch spread at this spa. Pay R320 per person for a buffet selection of starters, carvery, mains and desserts. Highlights include garlic-and-rosemary leg of lamb, roasted sirloin, slow-braised pork belly served with pineapple and chilli sauce, garlic-roasted leg of lamb, Thai green chicken curry, and a sweet ending of croquembouche served with fruit or mini wild-berry cheesecake.

Le-Si Ristorante at Casa Toscana Lodge (Lynwood Manor)

Pay R295 per person for a delicious three-course semi a la carte menu Mother’s Day lunch, kids under 12 years eat for free. Live entertainment by artist Coenie de Villiers can be enjoyed at the Blouhond Theatre while tucking in to the lunch buffet which includes desserts, coffee and tea. The buffet is R350 per person.

Mongena Game Lodge (Hammanskraal)

Take a trip to the game reserve and let the chefs spoil mom with a lunch buffet at the Tshukudu lapa with entertainment by Dieter Uken’s saxophone. Dishes will include homemade bread baskets, creamy butternut soup, matured roasted beef rump, lamb curry, chicken pie, and a tempting dessert selection. The lunch will cost R360 per adult and R60 per child aged two to five years. If you’d like to go on an additional game drive, add on R180 for kids six to eleven years of age.

Durban

9th Avenue Bistro (Morningside)

Pay R325 per person for a three-course lunch menu. Highlights include duck crostillant with red onion jam and boerenkaas, wild boar hock terrine with piccalilli and confit egg yolk, braised beef brisket with mustard mash, and apple crumble or vanilla crème brûlée for dessert.

The Big Easy (Durban Central)

Enjoy a day with the family as you celebrate mom, with a three-course sharing lunch for R415 per person.

Boiler Room Café (Morningside)

Enjoy a gourmet three-course Sunday lunch done in the quirky café’s style for R300. Highlights include spicy butternut soup or chicken terrine with braaied apple chutney for starters; slow-roasted lamb shoulder or mushroom and leek Wellington for mains; and white chocolate and Amarula cheesecake for dessert. They don’t have a liquor licence, so bring your own tipple to toast to your mom.

Cargo Hold (uShaka Marine World)

Treat mom to a three-course lunch at Cargo Hold. The menu will cost R345 per person and will include highlights of cured salmon trout with warm potato salad, Mozambican prawns with coriander pesto, and a warm chocolate pudding with vanilla ice cream for dessert. You can also opt for the two-course option (main and dessert) for R295 per person. There will be two sittings available at 11.30am and again at 2pm.

Lingela at Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani (Snell Parade)

Treat your mother to a delicious buffet lunch at this ritzy hotel from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The lunch costs R450 per adult and R220 per child under 12. This offer also includes welcome drinks, live entertainment and a gift for mom.

Moyo (uShaka Marine World)

Indulge in a lunch buffet with live entertainment and a welcome drink for R265 per adult. (Children between the ages of four and 12 pay R135; those under five eat for free.) Buffet items will include peri-peri chicken livers, tagines and potjies, carvery with chilli rump and harissa chicken, chermoula meatballs and curried butternut lasagne, interesting sides, and a large dessert selection.

The Ocean Terrace at The Oyster Box (Umhlanga Rocks)

Tuck into a six-course lunch for R750 per person or an elegant high tea filled with pastries, scones, quiches and cakes for R450 per person.

The Sugar Club (Umhlanga Rocks)

Treat your mother to a sumptuous buffet lunch at this elegant restaurant from 12.30pm, which includes a Lindt Chocolate gift. The lunch will cost R550 per person whereas the high tea costs R350 per person.

The Village Table (Umhlanga Rocks)

Head to this new spot at The Pearls for a pamper party with mom. The eatery wil be hosting mini manicure and massage stations for a day of beauty. The cost is R280 per person and will include a complimentary glass of bubbles and come canapés. Tickets are available via Quicket.

Cape Town

Azure Restaurant at The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa (Camps Bay)

Celebrate Mother’s Day with a Tea by the Sea buffet for R310 per person, or enjoy a lavish lunch buffet with the family. The buffet costs R495 per adult and will include a wide selection of seafood, meats, salads, tempting desserts and more. The cost also includes live music and a surprise gift for mom at the end of the day.

Bliss Boutique Hotel (Sunset Beach)

Spoil your mother with a three-course menu with bubbly for lunch or dinner on Sunday 14 May. The menu is available for R600 for two guests and includes a bottle of bubbly to share.

Harbour House (Constantia Nek)

Treat mum to a special high tea at this Constantia spot. The high tea offerings will start at R150 per person, with the option to add a glass or bottle of bubbles. Expect delicious bites of scones, sandwiches, samoosas and tarts.

La Boheme (Sea Point)

Enjoy a Mother’s Day lunch at this neighbourhood wine bar for R185 for two courses, or R215 for three courses. Highlights include Italian sausage tortellini with roasted garlic sauce, seared beef with pomegranates, braised pork belly with butternut mash, and chicken cordon bleu with baby potatoes and peas. Book to avoid disappointment.

Massimo’s (Hout Bay)

Enjoy an Italian Mother’s Day lunch at this family-friendly spot. Choose between a two course (R195) or three course (R249) menu with options of seared beef carpaccio, mini ricotta gnocchi, pork with mushroom and chestnut casserole, pizzas, and tiramisu or Italian kisses for dessert.

Moyo (Blouberg, Kirstenbosch)

Pay R385 per adult (or R215 for kids between the ages of four and 12) for a communal feast with live entertainment and a welcome drink. The menu includes dishes like West Coast mussels, a chicken-and-date tagine, a Moroccan-spiced deboned leg of lamb, and a selection of desserts.

On19 (Foreshore)

Stardust Theatrical Dining (Woodstock)

The special Mother’s Day lunch menu will include a theatrical performance – perfect for theatre-loving moms. The five-course Mediterranean-inspired feast will include dishes like spanakopitas and falafels, grilled queen prawns, Moroccan chicken skewers, babaganoush and pitas, as well as crème brûlée, chocolate malva pudding and halva ice cream. The cost per person is R450 and includes entertainment.

Radisson Blu Hotel (V&A Waterfront)

Treat mom to a Mad Hatters lunch buffet at this hotel restaurant for R425 per person. The price includes a spa voucher for mom, as well as a voucher for a wine-and-chocolate tasting at Waterford Wine Estate.

The Square at The Vineyard Hotel (Newlands)

Head chef at the Vineyard, Carl Van Rooyen, has put together an indulgent Mother’s Day lunch menu for R415 per person. Expect dishes like delicate smoked salmon orzo, succulent sirloin and a delicious chocolate dessert. Numbers are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Trees Restaurant at Townhouse Hotel (City Bowl)

Treat her to a lunch menu designed by Michelin-trained chef Stefan Schmidt for R338 per person. The meal includes a choice of bottomless soups, a salad bar and a huge buffet, featuring everything from butter chicken with panko-coated chicken livers, seafood and prawns with Thai-style curry, and a plated dessert of banana-nut flan.

Winelands and surrounds

The Bakery at Jordan (Stellenbosch)

Feast on the special Mother’s Day menu at this relaxed bakery on 14 May. For R295 per person, expect dishes of freshly baked breads, braised beef with truffle mash or slow-roasted chicken pie, and a homemade chocolate fondant for dessert. The menu also includes a glass of Jordan wine.

Benguela on Main (Somerset West)

This popular spot will be offering a delicious lunch for R550 per person, created by executive chef Jean Delport.

Benguela Brasserie & Restaurant (Sedgefield)

Lakeside Lodge & Spa’s in-house restaurant will be offering a luxurious two- or three-course lunch for Mother’s Day by chef Kelly-Anne Pietersen. Set menu highlights include garlic and parmesan arancini, smoked pork neck with aligot potato, and a coffee and pecan nut pudding. The lunch will be priced at R380 per person for three courses.

Eat@simonsvlei (Paarl)

Surrounded by mountains and rolling lawns, treat mom to a three-course lunch for R265. The plated lunch will include highlights like bobotie spring rolls, pan-fried salmon trout with parmesan mash and apple tarte tatin with vanilla ice cream.

Eight at Spier (Stellenbosch)

Spoil mom with a farm-to-table feast for R400. Options will include dishes like wood-fired breads, roasted cauliflower and chickpea salad, potato gnocchi with wild mushrooms, pasture-reared pork roast and, for dessert, baked lemon pudding.

The Governor’s Hall at Lanzerac (Stellenbosch)

To celebrate Mother’s Day, this Winelands restaurant will be hosting a special three-course Sunday lunch for R450 per person. All guests will also receive a welcome drink and all moms will receive a special gift from the chef.

Hoghouse BBQ & Bakery at Spier (Stellenbosch)

Take mom to Hoghouse for a lazy lunch overlooking the Spier Werf. At R450 per person, the three-course feast includes a variety of starters, such as chicken wings and smoked pork belly croquettes, mains of pulled Moroccan lamb shoulder and duck cassoulet, and a dessert of apple strudel with nougat.

Le Pommier (Stellenbosch)

Feast on a lavish lunch with mom at this pretty wine estate restaurant. The South-African-inspired menu will also include a free gift and glass of wine for mom. Contact the restaurant for prices.

Lust Bistro (Simondium)

Celebrate your mom with a breakfast for R220 per person, or a lunch buffet for R250. The breakfast offering includes options like savoury muffins, cheese and pastry platters, haddock quiche and more. The lunch includes highlights like roasted lamb shoulder, creamy Cape seafood risotto bake and chicken in lemon and thyme. For dessert you can look forward to a fruit cake tiramisu.

The Red Table Restaurant at Nederburg (Paarl)

Treat mom to an elegant three-course lunch menu for R350 per person (excluding wine). Highlights include duck confit springrolls, salmon wellington, and moist carrot cake for dessert. Nederburg wines will be on offer by the glass and the à la carte menu will be available throughout the day. Each mother will be treated to a surprise gift from Nederburg.

Tuck into a Mother’s Day lunch buffet with a glass of sparkling wine on arrival and a surprise gift for every mother and grandmother (R345 per person).
