A great location within the harbour at the V&A Waterfront. A good outdoor dining option in summer (or when the weather’s good). The freshly shucked oysters, fresh crayfish, seafood platter and pan of king prawns are excellent.

  • Bad service, food was cold and after seeing a fight between one of the employees and a client over wanting to move tables, it was clear that service means nothing.

  • Very disappointing experience! Waited over an hour and the food was dried out and bad tasting.

  • What a horrible experience! What a waste of money! Ruined what was suppossed to be a special Mother's Day meal for me and my mom. Bad service from waiter who seemed totally disinterested, and was having a conversation with the other waiter while serving us. But most of all, the food was horrible, the worst restaurant meal I have had in years and I eat out regularly. Amount of food and quality of food did not match the prices - food was sparse on the plate but most of all tasted horrid. Seafood was definitely not fresh. Worse still, when I called the manager with regard to the food in particular the piece of supposed line fish on my plate (which resembled a small piece of dried snoek and not yellowtail) she became defensive and would not admit that there was something wrong. Eventually told her to buzz off and said we would not be returning.

  • I live in Cape Town and ì eat out at good quality restaurants on a regular basis. Our restaurants are fantastic. Ive never eaten at Quay Four, so with my parents we decided to eat somewhere we have not tried. We wanted to sit outside to we chose the Quay Four Tavern.

It started poorly. The sign wait to be seated meant we waited 5 minutes and then decided to find our own seat. Our waitress was efficient and attended to us frequently and amicably. We ordered fish cakes, line fish of the day, baby calamari and fish and chips.

The food was at our table in 10 minutes. We were relieved as we were pretty hungry. My father, whos been in the restaurant trade all his life, looked dubious. The waiter handed us our plates and ì immediately felt they were filthy. It felt like the plate had been wiped down with a warm cloth so that grease and food remnants were smeared on both surfaces of the plate. I made my folks aware of it, but they were reluctant to complain. The food was warm, at best. My calamari had not been cleaned so the pen was still in the calamari as was a creamy substance that accompanied the pen. My fathers fish (fish and chips ) was oily and the fish cakes were more like fish balls were very watery inside with a very hard almost burnt crust. It was as if the fish balls were frozen and then thrown into some oil for a few minutes. My mothers fish was pretty good. I think we would have been fine if the food had been satisfactory. I spoke to the manager on duty who said he would look into it. Reassuring?!

The tip of the iceberg came when after leaving most of my food I was drinking my grapetiser I noticed a cockroach floating in the ice.

I did not inform my folks as they would probably have thrown up. Whilst watching them eat, I noticed other people complaining. One guy was complaining about the chewy calamari and the table next to us were talking about the tasteless fish cakes. We were seated outside, and most of the patrons were highly annoyed by the constant irritation by the seagulls. We saw no signs about not feeding the birds(as is present in other restaurants at the V&A) or any intervention by the staff to chase the birds away as they left their faeces on the chairs and tables.

I will admit that Quay Four Tavern does not pretend to be a high end establishment, but as a highly prominent eatery in a very popular tourist destination it was a very disappointing experience. If you eat because you have to, you may not be as critical.

  • Quay Four has always been a favourite amongst my group of friends and I was really shocked to find that the ambiance was rated so low? As far as Im concerned the ambiance has always been great and theres always some form of live music going on while we drink and chat away. Quay Four is a winner in my books!

  • Awful! Where does one start? The burgers are better at Steers, the table was sticky and unwiped (grimy), the tables are so close together that it should be illegal to smoke on their deck - you get totally smoked out. There is almost no view of anything because you are all so closely packed together. Our waiter was good in terms of delivery, but the menu is unimaginative. For what it is, it is expensive. A total tourist trap. This restaurant does a great disservice to what the Waterfront is supposed to represent.

  • Hi visited this restaurant and lovely setting and vibe. Only downfall was the cockroach I found crawling around on my table. I pointed out to the waiter and she informed the manager which I thought was professional of her. The manager apologised sincerely and gave us our drinks free. I was impressed with this but somehow felt the evening was ruined. I do wish that she had informed us about the complimentary drinks during the meal. Otherwise a restaurant with a good vibe.
