Roast is a true find on high street, in Melrose arch and the quirky interior invites you into this treasure trove of deliciousness. For breakfast, try one of their proper fry-ups like the “South African”, with boerewors, sautéed mushrooms, roasted cherry tomatoes and their wicked homemade chakalaka.
Or try something lighter like their open toasts, made from a choice of freshly baked rye, honey oat or brioche bread, topped with poached eggs, avocado, tomato and jalapeno salsa. For lunch try their burgers, which are all served on a tasty brioche bun or their salads. The goat’s cheese and guacamole burger is both filling and lip smacking, and also good value for money.
Dinner at Roast is always interesting, especially on comedy nights, when the inside seating opens up into a cosy theatre with a stage. The gourmet rump, a 300g grilled rump steak, topped with buffalo mozzarella, roasted balsamic tomatoes and fresh rocket, served with baked sweet potato is noteworthy; and their gourmet pizzas are easy meals to share on comedy nights.
Delicious cakes are on display in a vintage glass case.
Roast Café boasts a small but well curated wine list, which features mostly local wines and a few international bubbles. Local favourites like Rupert and Rothschild Classique, Kanonkop and Meerlust are also available per glass. Local craft gin and beer is also available at incredible prices. Try their retro shakes for something sweet and cooling, or their popular
coffee and speciality hot drinks. The turmeric milk, made with almond milk, turmeric, ginger and honey is decadent, healthy and an absolute treat.
The service is excellent, with the maitre’d and waiters all making sure that all your needs are catered to. The staff is very friendly and well read up on the menu, and make great food and drink recommendations.
Roast is the perfect place for people watching on the high street in Melrose arch, as the outside of the café looks like a Parisian sidewalk café. The furniture is vintage 60s-70s, with old school seating booths in pastel pinks and blues. A large antique-style solid wood table with cakes displayed on vintage cake stands, draws you into the space. All tables are adorned with fresh flowers inside small turquoise vases. This quirky and yet classy interior is very welcoming and warm. Roast is the perfect spot for business meetings or a relaxed dinner catch up with friends.
