Eat this now: Melkkos at Ginger and Fig

The dish

Cinnamon-infused melkkos is served with a generous serving of cinnamon sugar, which adds delicious crunch. Topped off with pumpkin seeds and edible flowers, it looks as gorgeous as it is delicious.

The price

It’s only R25 on their winter menu.

The restaurant

Ginger and Fig owner Zane Figueiredo made a radical career shift, moving from a job in IT to open this hip Brooklyn bistro and bakery.

Pull up a chair and ogle the glorious things being created in the open kitchen. Cakes change daily, but recent creations include a cereal and milk jam cake with ginger crumble and edible flowers; a rooibos honey sponge with raw honeycomb; and a chocolate and strawberry cake topped with brownies, just for good measure.

There’s delicious savoury fare, too. A recent addition to the menu is the sous-vide chicken served in a chorizo broth with lentils, chicken breast, orange and butternut granita.
