Get ready for Aurum Restaurant at The Leonardo in Sandton

Anyone who’s spent time in Johannesburg over the last year or so will have noticed how the Sandton skyline shape has changed, The Leonardo dwarfing the other high-rise buildings to become the tallest building in Africa. Now the building is almost complete, meaning the great reveal of the incredible Aurum restaurant on the seventh floor.

On entering Aurum, one can’t help but be astounded by the sheer magnitude of the room in front of you. Triple-volume ceilings with dramatic industrial-type arches and floor-to-ceiling windows contrast with the white marble and wooden bar and the opulent gold mesh feature that runs along the length of the restaurant.

Aurum Restaurant will focus on a modern interpretation of European cuisine.

The mezzanine level of the restaurant holds a very exciting wine library. Lisa de Beer, the sommelier, explains that instead of books, the walls are lined with wines – aficionados can enjoy a bottle or two from the extensive wine list, or partake in some of the limited edition local and international wines whilst languishing in deep leather and velvet chairs. A private dining room is also available that will host wine and food pairings with local and international winemakers.

Darren O’Donovan, the head chef, says the menu aims for a modern interpretation of European cuisine. It’s not fine dining, but it’s certainly contemporary and very interesting. The chefs aim to showcase traditional South African ingredients in many of the dishes, so expect to see dishes like a dessert inspired by rooibos tea, rusks and naartjie wedges.

Aurum is set to open soon. At last, we’ll be able to take in the incredible new epicurean and sensory experience.
