6 great places for ice cream in Durban

There’s certainly no shortage of ice-cream parlours in balmy Durban. From trendy cold-pressed spaghetti ice cream to swirls in flavours of butter-salted caramel or saffron, here’s where to get your next scoop in the beachside city.

Eish Kream (around Durban)

The Eish Kream team made waves on Instagram last year with its trendy cold-pressed spaghetti ice cream. You can get your fix from various stockists and markets around the city, or hire them to swirl some treats at your next event. Expect flavours like charcoal, Lotus Biscoff, café latte, Nutella, rainbow and even candy floss-flavoured unicorn tears. The silky ice cream is served in fun multi-coloured takeaway boxes, waffle cones, and even fish cones.

ERA Ice Cream (Morningside)

The cold treats at this popular ice-cream parlour on Cowey Road are made using thick farm-fresh cream with no added preservatives or artificial flavourants. Flavours include chocolate brownie sundaes, Ferrero Rocher, salted caramel, peanut and classic vanilla. These delectable treats are available in cones, cups and tubs to take home, or piled onto golden waffles for a sit-down indulgence.

The Glenwood Bakery (Glenwood)

The pasta-focused restaurant and popular corner bakery by Adam Robinson both serve up creamy ice cream made in-house. Enjoy the scoop of the day at the restaurant or grab one to go from the bakery, which offers flavours like creamy vanilla, chocolate malt, saffron or banana sorbet. No stabilisers or preservatives are used. The ice cream is available to take home (alongside your freshly baked croissants) in small containers.

Momenti Gelato (Morningside)

This little gelateria is hidden in the hip Station Drive Precinct. The team swirl up premium small-batch gelatos and vegan sorbet and have a dedicated following of ice-cream enthusiasts. Flavours include gianduja (chocolate and hazelut), pistachio, fresh black cherry sorbet, golden turmeric, mascarpone blueberry cheesecake and black sesame with honeycomb. Order yours in a crisp hand-rolled sugar cone or in a cup.

Old Town Italy (Umhlanga)

If you’ve already tried the glorious cronuts at this Italian market-style eatery, you’ll know that these guys don’t mess around when it comes to desserts. Visit the dreamy gelato stand inside to order a scoop or two with a homemade waffle cone as your vessel for pastel-coloured Italian gelato. We recommend the vanilla, cappuccino, Turkish delight, and chocolate and pistachio.
