Live celeb chef cook-alongs to entertain you during lockdown

While the ease in lockdown regulations may mean we can start visiting our favourite restaurants again, there are still those days when you’d rather not get out of your lockdown wardrobe – prepping dinner with your slippers on can seem so much more appealing. Luckily, the ever-innovating food industry has created ways to get the best of both during these trying times. Here’s how you can cook live with your favourite chefs from the comfort of your own kitchen.

Cook-a-Long with Jenny Morris

Learn to temper spices, mix your own butter chicken masala, make garlic butter pan breads and minted jeera rice with celeb chef Jenny Morris’ weekly Zoom cook-along. The live classes cost R200 per ticket, with the next one taking place on 11 July. Tickets available on Quicket.

Live-Cook

Live-Cook gives you the chance to cook with a celebrity chef in the comfort of your own home with uncomplicated recipes and quality local ingredients delivered to your door. The Live-Cook live stream channel gives you direct access to the chef, where you’ll have the chance to learn trade secrets, tips, and advice whilst they guide you (virtually) in your kitchen. Each episode is roughly 40 to 60 minutes long, depending on the recipe. All you need outside of the recipe box are basic pantry items and internet connectivity. Past celeb chefs have included Franck Dangereux and Luke Dale Roberts. Upcoming cook-alongs include chef Benny Masekwameng (9 July) and Bertus Basson (23 July). The cook-along with the ingredients cost R425 to R595 per box. Tickets available on Webtickets.

Masterclasses with Discovery

Vitality HealthyFood Studio live chef is a live, interactive cooking experience that enables a personal Zoom call with a master chef. Learn the tricks of the trade first-hand from the comfort of your own kitchen as you cook and connect. Chef David Higgs has hosted one and the next upcoming masterclass is with chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen on 17 July for R695 per household. The hour-long session is more of an insightful cooking demonstration and Q&A rather than a cook-along. Check out Discovery’s HealthyFood Studio for updates on upcoming chefs and classes.

UCOOK Along

The popular meal kit service has been doing a bit of innovating during the lockdown period and their latest addition is the UCOOK Along offering. Each week you get to pick a dish from a celebrity chef and cook it with them live, picking their brains for guidance and tips while in your own kitchen. Each week has featured chefs like Reuben Riffel, Karen Dudley and Franck Dangereux. As part of their delivery that week, customers will receive the ingredients for a specific restaurant or chef’s dish. With every dish ordered, a portion of the profits will go directly to the chef’s restaurant. Sign up for your UCOOK meal plan now.
