New restaurant openings in Johannesburg

The Potluck Club (Rosebank)

The famous Potluck Club has opened its doors in Johannesburg as of May 1st 2023 and is a much anticipated addition to the foodie scene. Luke Dale Roberts made the decision to expand the highly successful restaurant across the country with the new Pot Luck Club in Johannesburg being the brand’s first location outside of Cape Town. The restaurant will have a similar style to its Cape Town counterpart focusing on offering a variety of small plates inspired by global cuisine. The team will be led by head chef Tyron Gentry who is also head chef of The Shortmarket Club, and who has spent the last few months immersing himself in the Pot Luck Club experience in Cape Town in order to bring the same quality and flair to the Johannesburg restaurant.

Tyron will be working closely with Chef Jason Kosmas, the executive chef of The Pot Luck Club Cape Town, to create exciting new dishes for the Johannesburg menu while still keeping some of the Cape Town classics. The style of dishes aims at being easily accessible while still remaining high end, with an average cost for a plate being around R160.

Fugazzi (Rosebank)

This New York Italian inspired restaurant opened in March 2023 and is a new addition to the strip of restaurants at The Zone in Rosebank. The restaurant takes inspiration from the retro-cool Italian diners in New York of the lates 1980s and early 1990s and falls under The Colada Club, the same team to bring you Proud Mary and Mama Samba. The space boasts fun pinstripe terrazzo flooring, bright red leatherette booth seating and old school vintage inspired posters and was designed by Enrike de Villiers of Sketch.

The restaurant is headed by group head chef Warren Murley who spent time in Italy learning how to make the sourdough pizza bases and researching the flavours and techniques of Naples. That being said, they don’t want to be too serious and get caught up in the traditional aspect, aiming more to be the everyday pizza and pasta place where there is something for everyone. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with items like My Cousin Benny, a take on an eggs benedict except on pizza bread. For lunch go for a classic spaghetti and meatballs and for dinner tuck into the crowd pleasing chicken parmigiana. The average cost for a meal is around R135
