Address: 1 Vergenoegd Road, off Old Faure Road, Faure, Stellenbosch Wine Route

Phone number: 021 202 4373

Opening times: Tuesday–Sunday, breakfast 8–11am, lunch 11:30am–3:30pm

Food type: Modern traditional South African dining

Geuwels is located on a wine estate and is the perfect location for breakfast, lunch or a picnic. The restaurant is child friendly with ample space for the whole family to gather. It’s also a great location for brunch that will usually turn into lunch. Sit outside on a sunny day and make the most of the view.

Food

The first course of roosterkoek with Bovril-and-biltong butter is a great way to start off, followed by aubergine, tomato, smoked Dalewood feta, chermoula and crispy onions (the Dalewood feta is definitely the star of the dish). The second course of roasted hake, romesco sauce, courgette and basil is also a standout – the romesco brings the dish together so well, although the hake could have perhaps benefitted from more seasoning. Crisp young potatoes with sweet mustard work their magic in pulling all the elements together.

Drinks

Geuwels offers an extensive wine list with many different vintages, but you should definitely try the flagship Vergenoegd MCC. If you are not a big wine or MCC drinker, craft beers or gin and tonic are also on offer.

Service

The service was a little slow and there is room for improvement, for example explaining the dishes in detail to guests. The dining experience also felt rather rushed. The overall ambience of the restaurant is very elegant, but also casual and unintimidating.
