Design heaven at Hemelhuijs

At Hemelhuijs, Chef Jo-Hanna Wagener serves up fresh produce prepared in its simplest form. We love the understated elegance of her meals, and her chic, matt black crockery.

Owned by Jacques Erasmus, the man behind the stylish Kloof Street institution Manna Epicure, this small café situated on a pedestrianised stretch of De Waterkant Street has, in its relatively short existence, become a magnet for the city’s creative set. The interior is eclectic, yet uncluttered, serious, but with a sense of humour. Think white floating enamel shelves and gun-metal grey walls serving as a backdrop for flowers sprouting from the heads of ceramic busts and a mounted reindeer sporting plates between its antlers. The food, as prepared by Chef Jo-Hanna Wagener, is understatedly elegant bistronomia. The chicken roulade stuffed with marzipan and apricot and served with a satisfyingly sour-cherry sauce has become somewhat of a signature and comes highly recommended.
