South Africa has no shortage of beautiful restaurants offering delicious food, so the next time you’re planning a road trip, be sure to add a few of our favourite stops to your itinerary.

Best Destinations

PIER Restaurant (V&A Waterfront)

If you’re starting in (or heading to) Cape Town, you can’t go wrong with a stop at one of the Mother City’s most iconic tourist destinations: the V&A Waterfront. There are numerous exceptional restaurants to be found here, but one you definitely don’t want to miss is Eat Out three-star winner PIER. Part of the La Colombe group, PIER offers a seasonal tasting menu that keeps with its oceanic setting.

Wolfgat (Paternoster)

There are many scenic routes leading to and from the Mother City, but we recommend a day trip or overnight pit stop up the scenic West Coast. Paternoster remains a favourite destination for many reasons, chief among them being Wolfgat! Chef Kobus van der Merwe gives diners a unique taste of the surrounding environment with locally sourced ingredients from the ocean and Sandveld.

Dusk (Stellenbosch)

You can’t visit the Western Cape without heading to the Winelands where, arguably, some of the best restaurants are situated. If you’re tight on time, we recommend trying one of the hottest new restaurants in Stellenbosch and winner of the Eat Out Retail Capital New Restaurant Award Dusk. Expect some unusual flavours and ingredients at this conceptual restaurant run by co-owners Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin.

Farro (Bot River)

There are an endless number of restaurants well worth a stop as you head out of Cape Town, so plan for a long weekend in Grabouw or Hermanus to get a taste of what those regions have to offer. Situated equidistance between the two towns is the picturesque Gabrielskloof Wine Estate, where you’ll find Farro. Here, Chef Alex Windebank makes simple European-style food, including their famous chicken liver parfait served with perfectly toasted brioche.

Nevermind (Cape St. Francis)

Linger over good food with pristine ocean views at Chef Wesley Randles’ restaurant in Cape St. Francis. Thanks to its ability to make seasonal produce and open-fire cooking shine, Nevermind won the Eat Out Stella Artois Best Destination Restaurant Award in 2022, so you know it’s worth the trip!

The LivingRoom at Summerhill Guest Estate (Pinetown)

Durban is a must-visit on a trip to South Africa and we encourage you to take a break from surfing and shopping to head to the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant of the Year for 2022. The LivingRoom’s Chef Johannes Richter is skilled at transforming ordinary produce into works of art, with a unique African flair.

Zioux (Sandton)

If your journey takes you to the City of Gold, head to Zioux for a luxury fine-dining experience. Part of the Marble Group, Zioux’s interiors draw inspiration from the “urban jungle” that is Joburg, giving you a real taste of the city. The food is just as exciting with flavours from all over the globe, from South America to Mexico and North Africa.

Culinary Table (Lanseria)

For a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, head to Culinary Table. This is farm-to-table dining at its best, with the fresh ingredients singing on the plate. Take the kids along – they’ll love looking at the animals on the farm while you kick back with one of their delicious cocktails.
