One night, four chefs in Durban street-food cook-off

Four well-known Durban chefs from some of the city’s hottest eateries will set out on a street-food battle for one night only on 27 July. Competing head to head will be chefs Brett Gentles of Parc Café, Constantijn Hahndiek previously of Hartford House, Marcelle Roberts of Café 1999, and Brendon Newport of Surf Riders. Each will prepare two dishes paired with drinks and the winner will be determined by the public.

What’s on the menu? Expect delicious-sounding creations like crispy duck pancakes with Miss Molly bubbles from Marcelle; langoustine tails with crab ravioli and lemon cream from Brendon; chorizo and fontina croquettes from Constantijn; and coffee, cumin and gin-rubbed lamb from Brett.

Surf Riders Café will host the event, where four street food stalls will be set up for the chefs to prepare their dishes and compete to win the title. Guests will be tasked with judging the individual dishes on criteria of presentation, street food credibility, flavour and technique.

The street-food fest will be held at the buzzing Surf Riders on Durban’s Golden Mile. Photo supplied.

The street food fest will run from 6pm to 9pm and there will be live entertainment from DJ Scissorhands Renaud. Tickets, available via Stumbler, are R200 a pop and include the food and drinks from all four chefs.
